50,000 “Minecraft” Accounts Infected with Malware

Thousand of computers have been attacked with malware from uploading infected skins for the popular game Mindcraft. The infected skins were directly upload to the games official website. Skins are a means of modifying your player avatar. Malware can potentially reformat your hard drive, delete back up data and system programs.

Minecraft is one of the most popular games in the world. With approximately 74 million active players worldwide. The potential for this malware to spread could have been devastating. However it appears that those responsible were not professional cyber-criminals.

While the infected skins are no longer available on the website, it is disturbing that they were able to to be uploaded in the first place. Player can upload their own character skins designs to the website using a PNG file format. The systems infected may receive odd messages in their inboxes such as “You are nailed, buy a new computer this is a piece of s**t” or “You have maxed your internet usage for a lifetime”.

For more information regarding the Malware infection click here Mindcraft.

If you suspect that you or your child’s computer you should run an antivirus scan. Secondly, you may possibly have to reinstall the game software. Or in extreme cases where data needs to be restored we here at Orange County Computer are happy to help you.  Please call us at 949-699-6619
